Techne® has been setting the benchmark for gelation timing for almost 60 years. In fact several British Standards for this methodology were written using our equipment. Our new Model GT-5 and GT-6 digital gelation timer has set the bar even higher. Both models have digital timers, with the output time in 1 minute increments up to 9999 minutes, for the 1 RPM model (GT5), and in tenths of a minute up to 999.9 minutes, for the 10 RPM model (GT6). Accuracy of indicated gelation time is ±2% at a specific temperature .

With an easy to use, push button display. It is the perfect instrument for accurate measurement and quality control for the gelation of resin of adhesive based samples in the laboratory.

A bright LED shows time to the nearest minute or tenth of minute, and an audible bleep and light confirm completion of gelation.

Operation: A disc type plunger, immersed in the sample, hangs from a linkage which is crank-driven by a synchronous motor.  Each up and down cycle is completed in one minute or 1/10 minute and registered by a digital counter.  As gelation occurs rigidity of sample becomes sufficient to support plunger on the down stroke.  Resulting compression in the slip linkage closes a switch, activating a relay to stop motor and timer.  Pilot light signals completion of test.  Relay coil is used to produce a vibration in the linkage to overcome friction in the plunger slide bearing.

Construction: All components except the plunger are enclosed in an aluminum housing.  Front panel controls include switch for "operate" and "hold" positions, switch to start, neon light, digital counter with push button reset.  Count registers maximum of either 9999 minutes or 999.9 minutes.  Tubular support, extends horizontally from rear of housing.

Plunger: The plunger is stainless steel, with disc 22mm diameter (19 and 16mm also available) x 1.6mm thick attached to rod 100mm long x 3mm diameter with threaded upper end.  The weight of the plunger is carefully standardized at 11.4 grams.

Disposable plungers: For applications where it may be difficult to remove the stainless plungers, glass disposable plungers are available (supplied in packs of 100 with adaptor, accurately weighted to maintain instrument repeatability.  Adaptor screws into instrument and glass plunger is a push fit into the adaptor.
Stainless steel plungers:  Three sizes of stainless plungers are available and can be ordered separately.

Sample volume: The test requires about 100ml of sample in a container at least 38mm I.D. The top of the plunger stroke should be not less than 32mm below sample surface and the bottom of stroke not closer than 13mm to the bottom of the container.  Standard sample cups for use with the instruments are available.

Sample Cups: 100ml sample cups are available in standard packs, having an I.D or 38mm and depth of 76mm which are suitable for use with GT5 and GT6.  100ml is the recommended minimum sample size.

Gelation tests at constant temperatures: The gelation timer is designed so that test may be carried out at constant temperature.  The same cup may stand directly in a laboratory water bath and the gelation time is relatively narrow so that several instruments may, if necessary, stand together over quite a small bath. An alternative way of keeping sample cups at constant temperature is to use a Techne Dri-Block which is held at precisely controlled temperatures and which has an insert block with a hole drilled in it of a diameter to accept the sample cup.  Techne manufactures a wide range of both water baths and Dri-Block heaters suitable for gelation tests at constant temperatures.
